One of the best things about Christmas in Dubai is that while it’s certainly different to most expat’s home countries, it has a lot of wonderful upsides. One of these is definitely that spending all day in the kitchen is not required. In fact, I’ll don’t think I’ll ever cater Christmas myself ever again! Why slave away over a hot stove for hours upon hours when you can have a five star hotel provide a stunning spread without the drama?
This is my second Christmas in Dubai, and my second Turkey Takeaway. Christmas came early this year due to some commitments on the big day itself, and it was actually rather lovely – it gave everyone a chance to get together without other family commitments getting in the way.
Our choice this year was La Farine at the fabulous JW Marriott Marquis, and it was an excellent one. The spread was extensive, and the turkey huge – in fact we even got out the scales at one point to settle the debate about just how many kilos it was (around six, if you’re wondering)!
The turkey is hot when you pick it up and the sides are cold – the package comes with instructions on how to heat each individual dish, which is fab. Everything can be done in the microwave too which is convenient (though you can use the oven too if you prefer). There’s no pressure to serve it up straight away – you can either keep the turkey hot in the oven on low, or just reheat it for 20 minutes at 180 degrees (which is what we did).
As soon as the turkey was loaded into the car, the turkey smelled absolutely divine, and guests started commenting as soon it was unboxed. In fact everyone was blown away by the sheer volume of food!
Our turkey dinner included…
Apple, celery and chestnut stuffing
Roasted maple glazed carrot and turnip
Roasted butternut squash
Bacon wrapped chipolatas
This extensive feast is billed as feeding 10-12, and it actually fed 13 adults and 3 children (we had some extras pop in), plenty of second servings and enough leftovers for two meals for two the day after. This is so impressive when you consider it cost 750AED (at twelve guests, that’s just 62.5dhs per guest!!). It’s such an economical way to cater Christmas (well, La Farine actually can cater any time of year) and you get top notch food without messing up the kitchen.
The turkey was spot on – juicy, tender and flavoursome. The sides were also amazing – potato lovers get both amazing mashed and roasted potatoes – but my favourite was the roasted maple glazed carrot and turnip. Sweet, tender, so moreish. The cranberry sauce and turkey gravy were spot on, and the stuffing is handsdown, the best I’ve ever tasted. Ok, that dish didn’t make it to the leftovers stage…I’d recommend ordering an extra portion of stuffing as it was so popular with all of our guests (and myself!).
Compared to last year’s turkey (from a hotel on The Palm), this one absolutely slayed (or should that be, sleighed?), and we thought last year’s was pretty darn good. All of our guests raved about the La Farine’s food and went home very well sated, with none of the fuss. And I got to spend more time with them as I wasn’t stuck in the kitchen! Honestly, you’d be mad to not choose this option for Christmas – with the cost of Christmas brunch packages, you could add in purchasing all the beverages you could stomach and still come in well under.
I seriously recommend you place your turkey order before they book up – when you’re talking huge birds like this, there will be limits on capacity and you don’t want to be disappointed. My guests are already asking if we can do it again on Christmas day!
Serves 10 – 12 guests, starting from AED 750. Customers are required to pay in advance in La Farine or provide credit card guarantee through restaurant reservations. Order must be made a minimum of 48 hours in advance. Customers are required to collect the turkey themselves, as delivery is not provided.
