Jia Jia Tang Bao is a name that pops up again and again in lists of Shanghai’s best Xiao Long Bao – though this seems a subject of much passionate debate.
Jia Jia Tang Bao is a small, no-frills local eatery that serves only XLB. No fancy tables, menus or decor here – get in, eat the good stuff, get out so the next lot can. It’s as simple as that. And it seems to be working for them.
If you want a choice of the full range of flavours, get up early (well, early for a holiday) and head to Huanghe Road. There’s no English translated sign and good luck asking your taxi driver which it is – so just look for the queue. Expect to wait anywhere from 20 minutes to 1 hour depending on the time of day. There is a brief English menu at the counter when you enter if you ask (well, just babble anything in English and they’ll hand it to you). A lot of varieties will have sold out by 11am – usually only the crab is left after that. So go early and enjoy a delicious breakfast Shanghai style! Sadly I couldn’t partake as only seafood options were left when we reached the door. But on all accounts, I hear it’s worth the wait.
Price: 1/2$ (it’s that cheap).
